There are some times in life where the light you’re seeking isn’t the one coming from a direct source.
Rather than a blinding beam of light, you need to access it from the sides, cautiously, to not scare it away. Or worse, on the ironic side, to not scare yourself.
You need something gentle, something indirect.
For many years I’ve been inspired by the concept of light. When I was on board the tall-ship Europa, I would drop anything I was doing if not on watch to run and see a certain influence of the light hitting a spot in the sea, often a column of perpetual ice hit by a reflection. It fully captivates me when it’s surrounded by very strong shadows, as you may have imagined by now. As if you could always count on some drops of hope within whichever the depth of darkness.
When I created these self-protraits, I was reaching out there for this very particular light. Something rather intangible, almost incidental, that nevertheless will bath you fully.
