Helena.
This name was born from a very significant encounter. Let me tell you about it.

After the end of my trip to Antarctica, I spent a few days in the Argentinian Patagonia, to conclude with a couple of weeks up North in Buenos Aires. There, in the middle of a raging city involved in the defense of dignity and freedom, I visited a very special house. Built in 1929, it’s a pastel-colours dream, with unique treasures in every corner and an incredible arrangement of light bathing full-of-character spaces. Elena is the owner, an inspiring human who has brought to life every wall on this house. It’s her home, which she opens to the world and sees as a living and growing creature. “The margin” (understood also as “the edge”) is the name of it, a place thought to be as a kind of oasis where social norms and customs stay outside, as long as respect takes precedence. A place where outsiders can leave part of their essence, constructing a whole with many different layers; where the limits of “otherness” and “personal” are softened; where the physical world and the world of ideas melt into the other.

It’s no brainer that Elena, who is also a painter and a writer, and I connected immediately. And after me having taken these self-portraits, we discovered we hadn’t had enough of each other and extended the evening to share a bottle of wine in the recently remodelled cantina (traditional bars in Latinoamérica) at the corner of her street. As her house, a place over a century old who has seen many of the emblematic figures of Buenos Aires pass by.
Elena and I talked for hours, and since the very first minute I had this instant feel you get when you meet a kindred spirit: you know they will remain in your life for a long time and that your existence timelines have just crossed and started their parallel paths.

With these photos I am trying to capture all this: the connection among us, the very special and atemporal place the house is, and the dedication Elena has put into the house, marking it with her own essence, adding another layer, where you definitely can taste her soul.
